Whatever happened to Sanger Sales?

February 16, 2014 Posted by Yard Guy

In the mid-1970s, I became infatuated with a salvage yard called Sanger Sales. I believe it was located to the north of Story Road on Felipe Avenue just west of Highway 101. I remember after the interchange was built, you could see it down below, a large rambling site filled with treasurers. It seems to have been there from about the early 1970s to about 1990 or so. During that time, there were a number of salvage yards in San Jose, including Anderson’s and an indoor place on the north side of West Julian Street at about North San Pedro Street. The indoor place had mainly wood related products. The Anderson’s site is still there on North Montgomery Street filled with stuff. Wonder what’s going on there.

The non-profit places such as Salvation ArmySt. Vincent DePaul’s, and Goodwill also used to have salvage yards – or what were then called boneyards. My favorite was the St. Vincent DePaul’s located on Coleman Avenue north of West Taylor Street. They moved to South Seventh Street later and had a large indoor selection of furniture as well as cars (I bought my 1987 Alfa Romeo there). Their last location was on Story Road, and by then they were ratcheting it down to household items. They all abandoned the salvage market, maybe due to insurance reasons. The Salvation Army and Goodwill sadly now sell mainly household goods.
