160 E St. John St demolition starting

February 11, 2014 Posted by Yard Guy

The Allen Apartment Building Annex at 160 East St. John St. is undergoing asbestos remediation in preparation for demolition. This 4-unit building was damaged on the west side when the landmark Donner-Houghton House was destroyed by fire.  The architect has not been identified, although likely it was Charles McKenzie after he separated his partnership with Frank Delos Wolfe. The building has similar features found on other buildings he designed during the early years of the second decade of the twentieth century.

Midpen Housing will be building on this site, as well as on the old Donner-Houghton House site. The City of San Jose gave clearance to demolish the building a few years ago, and Mid-pen recently filed for permits. The permit states that mitigation will take place after the demolition, so looks like there won’t be any salvage activities going on.
