Great ReStore News!

April 9, 2014 Posted by Yard Guy

Just dropped by Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore on South Second Street in downtown San Jose, and saw a notice that a new store is opening in San Jose on May 31 at 1608 Las Plumas. The site looks to be the old City Corp Yard. That site had lots of open space, so perhaps there will be an outdoor yard for larger building items. The last time I was there was to take a look at the roof trusses of the old YWCA building.  The Julia Morgan designed YWCA was demolished during the early days of Redevelopment in downtown San Jose, but they City had salvaged the trusses and left them at the Las Plumas Corp Yard.

I’ll drop by soon and take some photos to see what’s going on.

ReStore Silicon Valley

Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore Silicon Valley opened over a year ago at 1008 South Second Street in downtown San Jose.

In their own words:

Habitat for Humanity ReStores are nonprofit home improvement stores and donation centers that sell new and gently used furniture, home accessories, building materials, and appliances to the public at a fraction of the retail price.  Habitat for Humanity ReStores are proudly owned and operated by local Habitat for Humanity affiliates, and proceeds are used to build homes, community, and hope locally and around the world.

I drop by about once a week to see if they have any new items of interest. Their stock is primarily new stuff, donated from construction projects or manufacturers. Parking is available from both South Second and South Third Streets. They are open Tuesday-Saturday 9-5.

Window salvage find

January 27, 2014 Posted by Yard Guy

Last week a homeowner in Willow Glen wanted to recycle some windows pulled from a remodeling going on along Carolyn Avenue. It was posted both on and on Willow Glen’s eList, aka Willow Glen Backfence. I succeeded in getting three wood double-pane double-hung windows, with upper multi-lite panes. The owner said the response had been good from the posting, although of course I moved quickly – so was able to bring these home. The price was right at under $30 each. The ReStore recently had some in at under $100 – which I missed getting.
